Building Community Resilience: Preparing to Support Our Community During Emergencies
Recent weather events across Auckland have reminded us how important it is to be prepared for emergencies. Whether it’s severe flooding, storms, cyclones, power outages, or other unexpected events, communities are often the first to support one another in the hours and days following a disaster.
That’s why our team recently participated in Community Emergency Hub training facilitated by Glenn from Auckland Emergency Management.
What We Learned
The training provided practical guidance on how Community Emergency Hubs can operate during and after an emergency. Community Emergency Hubs are community-led locations where neighbours can come together to share information, identify needs, coordinate support, and help each other when official services may be stretched or focused on life-threatening situations.
Our team learned about:
- Emergency response and coordination
- Information gathering and sharing
- Supporting vulnerable community members
- Connecting local needs with official emergency management responses
- The role communities play in helping each other recover after an emergency
What This Means for Our Community
While we are not an emergency service, we are working towards strengthening our ability to support our local community during times of crisis.
By building our knowledge and preparedness, we can play a role in:
- Sharing trusted information
- Connecting people with available support
- Helping identify community needs
- Supporting local resilience and recovery efforts
We work closely with Auckland Emergency Management and rely on their official guidance and updates during emergency situations.
How You Can Be Prepared
One of the most important things every household can do is have a plan before an emergency happens.
We encourage everyone to:
- Know your evacuation routes
- Have emergency supplies ready
- Keep important documents accessible
- Check on neighbours and whānau during emergencies when it is safe to do so
- Follow official information sources

A huge thank you to Glenn and the team at Auckland Emergency Management for sharing their knowledge and helping local organisations build stronger, more resilient communities.
When emergencies happen, strong communities make all the difference.
